Helix Collective‘s Los Angeles Live Score Film Festival features short films with original scores performed live-to-picture by Helix Collective.
Winning festival film composers and filmmakers are paired by Helix Collective to create an original score for performance at the festival. The film is screened with the score performed live by the renowned performance and recording ensemble, Helix Collective. Before the screening, the panel includes an interview with each filmmaker and composer pair about their collaborative process. Awards for Best Picture and Best Musical Score are presented at the close of the festival.
The 2022 festival signature sponsors are the L.A. Film School, Orange Tree Samples, and Sonic Fuel Studios. Additional festival supporters including the Alliance for Women Film Composers and the Academy of Scoring Arts.
Now in it’s seventh season, LALSFF’s goal is to highlight the role of collaboration between composers and filmmakers. Acting like a talent agent, the festival brings experts in the two disciplines together. At the screenings, filmmakers and composers hear and see the work of new colleagues, meet new collaborators, and establish working relationships with each other. Helix Collective proves it is possible to have talented, experienced film musicians play and record for independent films!
Cue & A is an original Broad Stage production celebrating the power of film scores by today’s most gamechanging composers. Join us as film composer Michael Abels — best known for his work on Jordan Peele's acclaimed Get Out and Us — discusses his composition process and brings his scores to life onstage with clips from the films! Enjoy conversation, commentary, and an audience Q&A moderated by the former President of Music at 20th Century Fox: award-winning songwriter, composer, and producer Robert Kraft.
Helix Collective will be performing cues live-to-picture and "Winged Creatures" for solo flute and clarinet with our 9-piece ensemble and conductor, Phil Popham with soloists Sarah Robinson, flute and Jonathan Sacdalan, clarinet.
L.A. Opera Young Artist Alaysha Fox will perform a solo from the opera “Omar” and Concert Artists Guild competition winner Dominic Cheli will perform “Iconoclasm” for solo piano.
In 2021 – for the second year in a row – SAGindie and Helix Collective’s FILM MUSIC CONNECT initiative paired indie filmmakers with the composer that could bring their ideas to life in sound.
Starting with a workshop led by Phil Popham of Helix Collective on how to choose the right composer for your project, four filmmakers were selected to participate in Film Music Connect 2021. The makers of August Visitor (Ifeyinwa Arinze), Future Fred (Brent Katz), The Promposal (Traci Carter Holsey), and SILT (Emilie Upczak) then got to work reviewing a set of composer reels to find their right match. They connected with their composers Michael Paraskevas, Annie Rosevear, Cora Chung, and Nathalie Bonin. And what happened next?
This virtual panel will highlight how these filmmaker/composer teams worked together and got their projects to the finish line. The panel will screen clips from the films, feature insight from the filmmakers and composers themselves, and explore the entire process and what everyone on the teams learned along the way.
